M.A.P.L.E. Tutoring at Samara Learning Center is structured to provide students academic assistance while also building executive functioning skills (on task, organizing, prioritizing...) and Success Attributes (proactivity, perseverance...) while utilizing peer camaraderie. Let us deal with the homework and missing assignments, so you can concentrate on being parent/guardian.

Organization​​​

  • Organization of binders, backpacks, and school materials

  • Use of planners and/or assignment organizers

  • Utilization of homework and grade programs (i.e. StudentVue)

  • Time management

Prioritization Skills

  • Establishing an order of assignment completion based on complexity, due dates, and scoring

Project Management Skills

  • Organizing larger projects into smaller manageable and achievable, goals

  • Understanding and Utilization of Resources

  • Credible sources of information

  • Online thesaurus and dictionaries

  • Internet search engines

Proactivity

  • ​Asking for clarification when confused about assignments or projects; calling a peer, emailing a teacher, asking teacher to proofread or edit before due dates

Study Strategies​


M.A.P.L.E. Tutoring’s staff wants to be part of your child’s team through ongoing communication with you, teachers, and other service providers.  School and homework issues can impact grades, skill development, self-esteem, and relationships with parents/guardians. M.A.P.L.E Tutoring gives you the opportunity to focus on your relationship with your child rather than feeling like a homework taskmaster and your child a frustrated student.

M.A.P.L.E. TUTORING PROGRAM ONLINE

Primarily, we are meeting with students in person, but we do have online options available. Understandably, some parents are concerned about the effectiveness about meeting with their child online.  To see how may differ from your past experiences, please read the next section.

WHAT WILL ONLINE GROUP TUTORING BE LIKE?​​

HOW WILL WE OBSERVE IF THEY ARE ON TASK/STRUGGLING?

  • Instead of walking in, the kids will sign in to an interactive live teleconference link on Google Calendar, so we will be able to see each student's faces.

    • Such as, where their eyes go is a wonderful indicator of on task behavior.

  • With your permission, we are able to sign into your child's school accounts, so we can watch their progress, or lack there of, in real-time. For example, if we sign into your child's Google Docs, we can see the typing.

  • By having the students "Screenshare" or "Present Now," we can check in what students are actually looking at to help with on task behavior and/or understand the problem the are struggling on.

HOW WILL THEY GET HELP WHEN THEY NEED IT?

  • The small group setting (or one-on-one for individual tutoring) allows opportunities for kids to feel comfortable enough to ask clarification questions because there is stronger rapport within a small group, they can see and hear peers working on similar issues, and the tutor's attention is only divided between a few students instead of a larger class. 

  • There are many programs, such as the annotation tool on Webex or using Google's Jamboard,  where we can watch the students' work in live time.

  • When tutors need to model how to do something,

    • such as a math computation, we can use tools such as Webex annotation tool, Google's Jamboard, etc..

    • such as editing, we can use the editing tool on Google Docs.

    • such as navigating the use of an online tool, like how to split screens or use a thesaurus, we can use the "Screenshare" or "Present Now."

  • In addition, we can check their grades and assignments lists to help them prioritize, check for progress, and check for understanding.

  • Since we are keeping the group so small, we can still individualize for each kids' needs and strengths.
